Every time an article like this appears, or like this; and every time left-leaning blogs post stories like this (“the big one”?), or like this; every time a second of media airtime, an inch of print, or an ounce of effort goes into excoriating Alberto Gonzales, George Bush is thrilled. Just like I said four months ago, Democrats are squandering their political capital by continuing to make this such a high profile issue. Why? Because most everyone is either already prepared to believe that the worst possible allegations against Gonzales are true, or do not care. Let’s see, what do we have on our plate? Kids dying in Iraq? Check. Economy looking shaky? Check. Successful children’s health program facing a veto? Check. Rising income inequality? Check. Global warming? Check. So let’s have our first priority be — a dogpile on Alberto! Wheeeeeee. What fun, look at him squirm. Wheeeeee. Meanwhile the President skates on everything else.
Get your priorities straight, Democrats. It isn’t that you don’t have a point; it’s that six or eight or twenty or a hundred other issues are more important to the country than you scoring political points by bashing Bush’s buddy. Since taking over Congress in November, the approval rating of the (now Democratic) Congress consistently around 25%. That’s less than ratings for the man you think is the worst President ever. This is why.
Move on. Don’t stop watching the Attorney General, just don’t make the Alberto dogpile job one.
