We are on our way, finally. I’m posting this from the Airporter bus, lurching through traffic on 101. Nifty that Sonic.net provides free WiFi on the bus.
We are exhausted and we’ve just started. We seriously underestimated the amount of time it would take to finish everything we had to do before leaving, which included not just packing, but also getting the house in shape for visitors. In my usual fashion, i left a ton of stuff to the last minute, including getting a blood test as part of a physical that I had about a month ago. That was rough, not being able to even drink coffee.
When I was out and about, I started thinking about how comfortable we are in our own society and country, how much we intuitively understand about how people are supposed to interact, how attuned to nuance in gestures and words and glances, and how hard that is to come by in foreigh places. In some ways, that lack of knowledge is liberating; you feel less constrained to play your social role because you have no idea what it is.
We’re on Santa Rosa Avenue now, I haven’t a clue why. More later, it is too bumpy and I keep missing the keys, so forgive any weird misspellings.
