As promised, here are some pictures from the British Museum, to give you a sense of its scale. If you are ever in London, the museum is a must.
One of the more extraordinary rooms contained enormous Assyrian rock carvings depicting a lion hunt. The realism and detail of the work stand out.
The sheer age of some of the artifacts is amazing. Here’s one that’s 6,000 years old. It seems they were fascinated with the voluptuous female form even back then (I know, supposedly it’s a fertility symbol, but I’m not sure I believe it).
Sometimes its the little things in these artifacts that convey their human-ness. In this statute of a husband and wife, I love the way the woman has her arm around her husband. This was a happy couple.
A final observation: Ancient Egyptians must all have had extremely long toes, as they all look like this:
