When we used to visit Berkeley in the late winter, I used to be amazed by what Suzie called “Tulip Trees,” which bloom very early in the season with gorgeous large white and pink flowers. Much to my surprise and delight, it turns out that the tree right in front of our new house in Kensington is one of those trees — and right now it is blooming crazily. A bit of research reveals that it is not what is commonly known as a Tulip Tree; rather, it is a type of magnolia tree, probably an Alexandrina Saucer Magnolia. Here are a few pictures of our tree that I took this morning from our front deck. Between the 74-degree temperature and these super blooms, it feels like Spring is here already.
